If you built your on-page SEO checklist for small business based on traditional SEO wisdom, you might be optimizing for the wrong signals. New research analyzing 1.2 million ChatGPT responses shows that AI citation patterns flip conventional advice on its head. What works for one industry actively sabotages another.

This matters because AI-mediated search is already eating into traditional Google traffic. The small businesses we work with at Atmos Digital are seeing ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview influence 20-30% of their search visibility. You need to know what these systems actually reward, not what SEO Twitter thinks they reward.

Why Most AI SEO Advice Fails at Scale

Kevin Indig’s latest research from Search Engine Journal analyzed citation patterns across seven industries. The core finding: there is no universal formula. The signals that triple citation rates in CRM and SaaS content actively suppress them in finance.

Word count is the clearest example. In CRM/SaaS, longer content won with a 1.59x citation advantage. Finance showed the opposite pattern: shorter pages earned 0.86x the word count of low-cited pages and still won more citations. Education was a signal void where writing style explained almost nothing about citation likelihood.

We have seen this play out with clients. A healthcare client added comprehensive FAQ sections and detailed methodology explanations, expecting AI systems to reward depth. Citations dropped. When we cut word count by 40% and front-loaded clinical data points, citations recovered. The conventional wisdom that AI always prefers thorough, long-form content does not hold.

The Only Universal Writing Signal That Matters

Across all seven verticals tested, one signal held: declarative language in your introduction. Pages with definitive phrasing in the first 1,000 characters saw a 14% aggregate citation lift.

This means opening with clear, confident statements instead of hedged introductions. Not “Many experts believe that conversion rates may improve when…” but “Conversion rates improve 23% when you place testimonials above the fold.” AI systems reward certainty in your opening paragraphs.

The data also revealed that DATE and NUMBER entities are universal positives across industries. Including specific dates and numerical data points consistently improved citation rates. PRICE entities, however, suppressed citations in five of six verticals tested. If your small business page leads with pricing tables, AI systems are less likely to cite you as a source.

Building an On-Page SEO Checklist for Small Business That AI Rewards

Based on what the research actually shows, here is how to restructure your on-page optimization:

Step 1: Audit your intro for definitive language. Rewrite the first 1,000 characters to eliminate hedging words like “might,” “could,” “possibly,” and “some experts suggest.” Replace them with declarative statements backed by data. This is the only writing signal that works across every industry.

Step 2: Match word count to your vertical, not to generic advice. If you operate in finance, insurance, or legal services, test shorter content formats in the 800-1,200 word range. If you are in SaaS, education technology, or complex B2B services, aim for 2,000+ words. Check what your top-ranking competitors in organic search are doing, then test both directions in AI systems. We track this with our SEO services by monitoring which client pages appear in ChatGPT citations versus which rank in Google.

Step 3: Front-load numerical entities and dates. Move statistics, case study results, and time-stamped data into your first three paragraphs. AI systems scan for these entity types early. A page that opens with “Our 2026 analysis of 847 local businesses showed…” signals authority faster than one that buries the data in paragraph seven.

Step 4: Rethink your heading structure entirely. The research found heading structure is binary: commit to the right number for your vertical or use none at all. Three to four headings performed worse than zero headings in every vertical tested. This goes against every traditional on-page SEO checklist we have ever seen, but the data is clear. If you use headings, use five or more. Otherwise, use flowing paragraphs with no H2 or H3 breaks.

Step 5: Remove or bury pricing information. If your page exists to educate or inform rather than sell, move pricing tables and cost breakdowns lower on the page or onto separate pages entirely. PRICE entities suppress AI citations in most industries. This does not mean hiding your prices from human visitors, it means separating educational content from transactional content more cleanly than traditional SEO demanded.

What This Means for Traditional SEO Signals

Knowledge Graph-verified entities are a negative signal for AI citation. This flips the last decade of entity-based SEO on its head. Pages with higher densities of KG-verified entities were cited less frequently, not more.

Our take: AI systems already know what Wikipedia and the Knowledge Graph say. They cite pages that add context, analysis, or data that the base knowledge layer lacks. If your content simply repeats well-established entity relationships, you are not adding value in AI’s view.

This also explains why Reddit does not dominate AI citations the way it dominated organic search in 2023-2024. Corporate content, particularly from recognized brands and institutions, wins AI citations. The research showed that AI citation behavior does not mirror what happened to organic search when Reddit exploded. Different ranking factors, different winner profiles.

For Small and Local Businesses

You do not need to rewrite everything tomorrow. Start with your five highest-traffic pages and your core service pages. Apply the intro rewrite first since it is universal. Then test word count adjustments on one page at a time while monitoring both traditional rankings and AI citation appearances.

Track AI citations manually for now. Search for your core topics in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview weekly. Note which pages get cited and which get skipped. In three months, you will have enough directional data to inform a broader content revision strategy.

Small business owners often ask us whether they should optimize for Google or for AI. The answer is both, but with different content architectures. Your on-page SEO checklist for small business now needs two columns: one for traditional search signals and one for AI citation signals. Some overlap, many do not.

The businesses that win the next two years of search will be the ones that test aggressively and let actual performance data override conventional wisdom. This research gives you a starting framework. Your own vertical-specific testing will refine it.
